Erling Haaland, Nico Gonzalez and Jeremy Doku all scored for City.

And things could have been even worse had Giorgi Mamardashvili not saved an early penalty from Haaland.

However, Liverpool thought they had levelled things up in the first half when captain Van Dijk headed home from a free-kick.

The centre-back powered his effort past Gigi Donnarumma to boost Liverpool’s morale away from home.

But his celebrations were short lived when VAR, headed up by Michael Oliver, controversially ruled that Andy Robertson had strayed offside.

The left-back did not touch Van Dijk’s header as it hit the back of City’s net.

But Robertson was instead deemed to have interfered with play by standing close to Donnarumma, despite not being directly in front of the goalie.

The VAR decision left Liverpool incensed as they went on to be hammered.
