A BOMB squad responded to a “suspicious” suitcase left on a footbridge near Stockport railway station – sparking evacuations in nearby homes.

Police, fire crews and paramedics rushed to the scene before putting up a 200 metre cordon while emergency services probed the area.

Stockport railway station was evacuated and all trains coming in and out were cancelled following the reported scare.

Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: “Just before 6pm this evening (Tuesday, 4th November), firefighters were called to reports of a suspicious item on Greek Street in Stockport.

“Two fire engines from Stockport and Whitehill fire stations, as well as the technical rescue unit from Ashton fire station, are currently at the scene where a suitcase has been left on the footbridge by Stockport railway station.”
