Asda shares first festive advert of the year starring the Grinch in a VERY unfamiliar role

Asda has kicked off the festive season by unveiling its Christmas advert, the first from any major supermarket this year.

The 90 second clip, which will be broadcast during ITV‘s 1% Club tonight, opens with the Grinch shopping with his human family at a Christmas market.

After seeing the cost of Christmas trees, simply labelled as ‘well pricey’, the famed Dr Seuss character breaks into song, singing ‘the prices this year are frightful, spenny gifts I’ve seen a sightful,’ to the tune of Frank Sinatra’s Let It Snow.

But as he sings ‘We’re getting quite low on dough, it’s a no, it’s a no, it’s a no,’ the Grinch spots an Asda store in the distance and his demeanour quickly changes.

He then walks to the supermarket aisles with his wife and two young children. Wowed by the apparent low prices he belts out ‘Oh, my worries show signs of stopping. Am I enjoying shopping?’.

He then dances through the aisles in delight, with his son doing cartwheels as other shoppers join in the chorus.

With bulging bags and a ‘wallet that’s no longer crying’, the party moves home, where all the people who ‘call him tight’ see that he’s ‘brought the party to them that night’.

The ad ends with the Grinch answering the door, before he heads outside and transforms back to his human ‘dad’ self.

The supermarket said the premise of the ad is that everyone gets ‘a little bit grinchy’ at Christmas.

The film was teased on Asda’s social channels at 7am this morning with the full version appearing on TV screens at 8.30pm tonight.

The Grinch first appeared in Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 1957, the character has appeared in dozens of adaptations since, including most famously by Jim Carey in the 2000 live adaptation film.

Rachel Eyre, Chief Customer Officer at Asda told the Daily Mail: ‘We’re so excited to launch this year’s Christmas campaign.

‘We all love Christmas, but we also know it can come with financial pressures.

‘That’s why this year, we’re focused on helping everyone enjoy the festive season we all deserve, filled with joy, celebration, and the reassurance of Asda Price.

‘If we can win over the Grinch, the biggest cynic of all, then we know that with our unmatchable mix – amazing products at unbeatable value – we can all have a truly fabulous Christmas together at Asda.’

The ad features various products, including Asda’s Chicken Sticky Skewers Frozen Party Food for £2.47 and Sweetcorn Fritters for £1.97, which are also available on a 3 for £5 deal, and even a Grinch family set of pyjamas starting from just £7.

The supermarket was named runner-up in this year’s prestigious Good Housekeeping Christmas taste test, with 10 first and second place products.

Asda came in second place and was rated best for Canapes, Red and White Wine, Turkey Crown and Yule Log.

Asda’s turkey crown was deemed truly exceptional with a score of 85/100. The price ranges from £32.53 for a 1.5kg bird to £62.55 for a 2.5kg bird.

The supermarket also came top in the red wine category for it’s Extra Special Amarone at £19.97 as well as the white wine category, winning praise for Extra Special Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc (£23.98)

Asda also recently beat beaten dozens of competitors to become UK’s most awarded supermarket in this year’s International Wine Challenge 2025.

The prestigious global wine competition awarded Asda a staggering 155 medals including four Gold medals and 35 Silver medals.

Compared to its supermarket rivals, Asda received triple the number of medals of Sainsbury’s, more than 60 more medals than Tesco and more than 100 more medals than Waitrose.

The supermarket’s exclusive Exceptional Côte de Beaune Villages 2022 is the only supermarket own label red Burgundy to be awarded a Gold medal this year.

While Asda’s award-winning wine costs just £14.48 – the other Gold medal winners in the same category retail for upward for £250 a bottle.

In total, the IWC awarded the Asda wine 95 points, adding tasting notes of, ‘perfumed and red plums, cassis with floral and spices, elegant and complex with hints of cedar wood, textured and balanced long finish.’

Other Gold medal winners from Asda include, Exceptional Gavi di Gavi 2024 (£10.27), Exceptional Great Western Shiraz 2022 (£7.98) and Exceptional LBV Port 2019 (£12).

With a legacy spanning 40 years, the IWC is thought of as the world’s most rigorous, impartial, and influential wine competition, judged by a diverse global panel of expert judges.

While Asda has become the first supermarket to run their ad, it’s believed Sainsbury’s, Aldi and the famed John Lewis pieces will be appearing in coming weeks.
