A SERIOUS crash has closed the M6 in both directions for hours as emergency services race to the scene.
The motorway has slammed shut between Junction 27 and Junction 28 in Lancashire due to a “serious collision”.
Lancashire Police, emergency services, and National Highways Traffic Officers are all on the scene.
In a statement, National Highways said: “M6 in Lancashire is now closed in both directions between J28 at Leyland and J27 at Wigan due to a serious collision.
“Closure expected to be in place for several hours. “
They previously announced that the southbound carriageway had closed following the collision.
The northbound carriageway was then blocked as emergency services worked at the scene before announcing the motorway was closed in both directions.
Bouth southbound and northbound diversions are in place for drivers who are urged to plan ahead.
“If this closure impacts on your planned route, please allow extra journey time. Plan ahead, you may wish to re-route or even delay your journey,” a spokesperson said.
