King Charles puts Prince Andrew furore to one side as he visits Manchester synagogue in show of support for Jewish community after terror attack

The King will attempt to put the growing scandal around his brother Prince Andrew to one side today as he focuses on his public duties.

Charles, 76, arrived at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue this afternoon to show his support to the Jewish community after it was targeted by a knifeman earlier this month.

Two men were tragically killed during the incident and three others seriously injured.

The visit was not announced in advance due to heightened security but media are covering the engagement.

The King, who is Supreme Governor of the Church of England but has spent a lifetime fostering inter-faith harmony and dialogue, was keen to meet those impacted by the October 2 attack, as well as demonstrate his continued support for the Jewish community more generally.

Later he will meet emergency service personnel and acknowledge their efforts in support the local community in Heaton Park, Manchester.

The synagogue has just reopened for the first time since the incident that claimed the lives of Melvin Cravitz and Adrian Daulby.

The synagogue’s congregation, together with members of the wider Manchester Jewish community, gathered in the main building last week to celebrate the festivals of Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah.

Rob Kanter, the synagogue’s vice-president, said there was ‘a really positive attendance’. One attendee also described the atmosphere as ‘joyous and resilient’.

Jihad Al-Shamie, 35, carried out his murderous attack on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, Yom Kippur.

He first drove a car into a security guard and stabbed a congregant, before attempting to force entry into the synagogue, which had been barricaded by worshippers.

He was shot dead by police and enquiries into his background continue. Police are treating the attack as a terror incident.

Members of the public pay their respects at the synagogue today ahead of the King’s visit

It has been a challenging few weeks for the monarch, who is still undergoing weekly cancer treatment, as he tries to focus on his public work and state duties while facing a tsunami of allegations around his brother, Prince Andrew.

They concern both his friendship with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein and allegations by the late Virginia Guiffre that she was forced to have sex with him as a teenager, as well as continuing concern about his business dealings, particularly with China.

There have been fears inside Buckingham Palace that the scandal will overshadow His Majesty’s state visit to Vatican City later this week, where he is due to become the first British monarch and head of the Church of England to pray in public with a pope for 500 years, as a sign of his commitment to encouraging peace between faiths.
