Mercedes has revealed a concept car which draws inspiration from the brand’s legendary 540 K “Autobahn Courier” from 1938.

The Vision Iconic concept car took an elegant sloping roofline from the retro motor.

Meanwhile, the vehicle’s narrow rear lights and rounded rear end are reminiscent of the Mercedes 300 SL ‘Gullwing’ from the 1950s.

The interior screams luxury as it boasts blue velvet seats, brass detailing, and a floating glass dashboard dubbed “the Zeppelin”.

Mercedes decided to combine analogue and digital components for the controls rather than just installing a massive touchscreen.

The four-spoke steering wheel partly resembles a sailing ship’s wheel.

However, drivers might not even need to use it as the concept car is designed for a future of autopilots.

The interior creates enough space for the driver to sit back, relax and sip champagne instead of steering.

The sleek EV has also ditched the brand’s new aerodynamic jellybean shapes after critics slammed its recent electric models for being bland.

The Germant car giant instead went back to its roots with an upright grille, razor-sharp lines, and tiny star-shaped headlights.

The car’s deep black “solar paint” functions as an internal power plant, absorbing sunlight to provide up to 12,000 kilometres of free driving annually.

If you’re lucky enough to live somewhere with more sunshine than Stuttgart, you can get up to 20,000 kilometres range.

The Vision Iconic packs Level 4 autonomous driving, steer-by-wire tech, and rear-wheel steering for a smoother ride.

Mercedes says this futuristic steering setup will hit production cars as soon as 2026.

The German brand hasn’t released any word yet on the battery, drive or price.

The Vision’s aim is to highlight the design, and possibly show what the future of S-class line will look like.
