Guernsey, founded in 2011, pulled one back before half-time, before scoring three goals in a frenetic six-minute spell to level the scores.

The drama wasn’t over though, as the hosts retook the lead in the 70th minute to make it 6-5.

It took just two minutes for Guernsey to equalise once more, before club legend Ross Allen scored a 78th-minute winner to cap off an astounding comeback.

Former club president Matt Le Tissier, who was born on the island, was quick to react on X with four flushed face emojis, expressing his disbelief at the result.

Another fan wrote on X: “Having watched this quite frankly absurd goal-fest tonight, I now know what football was like when sides regularly used a 2-3-5 formation.”

Guernsey’s previous club record for most goals in a game was 11, which happened three times in their history, most recently in 2014 when they thumped Crawley Down Gatwick 11-0.

One fan even made reference to a common tennis scoreline, commenting: “Is this football or a tie-break?”

Situated about 70 miles off the UK’s South Coast, Guernsey play at their brand-new £10 million Victoria Park Stadium after being relegated from the eighth-tier Isthmian League South Central last season.

Kept afloat by private investors, Guernsey are obliged to pay the travel costs of their visitors, amounting to about £500,000 per season, for their home games.

Currently sitting fourth in the 20-team league, Guernsey are targeting an instant bounce back.

There is only one automatic promotion spot for the champions, while teams who finish second to fifth will battle for the other ticket to the eighth tier.
