Labour accused of making deputy national security adviser ‘scapegoat’ over collapse of China spying trial

Labour have blamed Jonathan Powell’s deputy for the controversial collapse of the Chinese spies case.

Dan Jarvis claimed that Matthew Collins, the deputy national security adviser was responsible for providing evidence about two alleged spies accused of passing information to Beijing.

However, the case against Christopher Cash and Christopher Berry collapsed last month after the CPS claimed the Government did not provide evidence China is a threat to the UK.

Jarvis told the House of Commons on Monday that Collins did not hand over statements and that Jonathan Powell had not seen them.

The decision to blame Mr Collins has led to claims that Labour are making him a ‘scapegoat’ for the scandal.
