Couple win £125k after ‘incompetent’ man forgets to cancel lottery ticket – despite his fiancée ordering him so they could save money for their wedding

A couple have won £125k after an ‘incompetent’ fiancé forgot to cancel his lottery ticket.

Saving for a wedding day involves many sacrifices for the wife and husband-to-be such as avoiding eating out or not booking that summer getaway to the Mediterranean.

For James Adam, 31, and his fiancée Rohanna Coulthard that meant cancelling his £12.25 a month subscription to the Postcode Lottery.

However, due to his own self-described ‘incompetence’, Mr Adam failed to cancel his subscription when asked.

But that has now proven to be a very lucrative mistake after the couple’s postcode –  in Kingswood near Bristol – came up in this month’s draw securing them a handsome share of the £1m cash prize pot along with seven of their neighbours.

Mr Adams said: ‘Thank God for just being lazy and really silly.

‘Incompetence pays off.’

Despite having asked Mr Adam to cancel the subscription, Ms Coulthard was unsurprisingly very happy her future husband’s mistake.

‘James never told me that he had signed up and I asked him to cancel the direct debit when I saw it going out because we are saving for the wedding,’ she said.

‘Thank goodness he didn’t. I wouldn’t be doing too great and [would] probably not be very well.

‘But here we are. I forgive him.’

The couple are planning to put their £125k prize towards a new bathroom and a honeymoon in New Zealand.

They plan to tie the knot in a ceremony in Devon in May 2027.

Kingswood was the first location announced in October’s draw, with four winning locations to be announced.

Other winners included social worker Gemma Marson-May who entered because she had a ‘strong feeling’ she would win and Postie Vanessa Smith who is planning a trip of a lifetime to Australia.

The ticket holders are not the only ones who will win big in the draw, local charities in each of the five winning areas will share a combined total of £1m to support their work.

So far the Postcode Lottery has raised over £1.5billion for thousands of charities.
