SKODA has revealed a dramatic new look for an iconic model from the 1970s – complete with a retro-inspired yet modern coupe design.
In recent times, the likes of Renault, Ford and Fiat have been bringing back long-discontinued nameplates and giving them a jazzy new look.

Skoda is now getting in on the act, showing off a concept design of the legendary 110 R coupe from the 1970s.
An icon for motorsport fans and enthusiasts of classic cars, the 110 R – produced from 1970 to 1980 – was a sleek rear-engined coupe.
It famously laid the foundation for the Czech brand’s racing success of the 130 RS, which competed in rally events and the European Touring Car Championship.
Now, it’s been given a new lease of life courtesy of Skoda designer Richard Svec – who strived to create a car that appeals to young drivers who love motorsport but also desire an elegant coupe for everyday use.
On Skoda’s website, he said: “I’ve always had a passion for elegant cars.
“I appreciate the blend of clean volumes with simple details, which the 110 R embodies perfectly.
“What I was also impressed by was this model´s crossover into the world of motorsport. “
The result is a clean, geometric design that’s powered by electricity – allowing Svec to keep the car’s surfaces uncluttered and take away things like the traditional grille, all the while still reflecting the philosophy of the original.
Distinctive details, on the motor include concealed headlights which are hidden beneath sliding covers, a wraparound black trim inspired by the original’s air vents and striking turbofan-style alloy wheels.
To further honour the car’s racing legacy, the concept also includes flared fenders, a roll cage, centre-lock wheels and ribbing on the bonnet.
For now, the concept only exists in digital renders and is merely designed to showcase some of Skoda’s cutting-edge tech – such as small cameras replacing traditional side mirrors and Tech-loop lighting signatures, first seen in Skoda’s Vision O concept.
Furthermore, at the front, sensors and vertical LED daytime running lights are integrated into a contrasting black panel, alongside an illuminated Skoda logo.
Svec added that he approached the project with great care as he was keen preserve the essence of the original without relying too heavily on retro elements.
“Each element had to be treated with care – to avoid slipping into retro territory while still preserving the car’s identity,” he said.
Coupes could be making a comeback, with Skoda’s 110 R concept could potentially signalling a revival of the traditional two-door style – already seen in upcoming models like the electric Honda Prelude and the next-gen Audi TT.
