Senate Votes 55-45 on Clean CR – HotAir

We all knew it was coming and now it’s officially here. The Senate just voted on the clean CR passed earlier by the House and while Republicans did peel off a few members of the Democratic caucus, it was not enough. The vote was 55-45, just five short of the number needed to avoid the shutdown.

Here’s the breakdown:

We’ve known for more than a week, maybe longer that Fetterman was a yes vote and that Rand Paul was a no vote. Cortez-Masto released this statement explaining her decision to side with the GOP.

That’s why I cannot support a costly shutdown that would hurt Nevada families and hand even more power to this reckless administration. We need a bipartisan solution to address this impending health care crisis, but we should not be swapping the pain of one group of Americans for another.

I remain focused on protecting health care for working families, and I call on my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to work together to tackle this problem.

Before the vote was held there was a moment of levity on the Senate floor when Sen. Schumer got up to argue that polls showed people were going to blame Republicans for the shutdown. He then acknowledged that a poll from the NY Times suggested otherwise. He called that poll “biased” leading to laughter in the chamber.

After the vote, Sen. Thune said that while the shutdown was going to happen to appease the far left of the Democratic Party, it could quickly end as soon as tomorrow with just a few more votes.

Sen. Barrasso says Schumer has been running a “war room” to gear up for this shutdown for 8 weeks.

Democrats wanted a shutdown and tonight they got it. The shutdown will go into effect tonight at midnight.
