‘You Can’t Appease Your Way Out of Jihad’ – HotAir

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a defiant speech at the UN today, celebrating Israel’s victories over Hamas and Hezbollah and chiding western government which have recently chosen to recognize a Palestinian state.

Even before the speech started there were large protests outside the UN.

And inside there was a sizeable walkout when Netanyahu stepped up to speak.

The walkout inside the UN was celebrated by the crowd outside.

If the anti-Israel activists were expecting Netanyahu to look ashamed, they got something very different once he started speaking. It began with a map which he had used in his UN speech a year ago.

He then offered an update, taking special note of the pagers attack on Hezbollah.

So one year later, he noted that many of Israel’s enemies, including Yahya Sinwar, are now gone.

He then pointed out Hamas is still holding 48 Israeli hostages. He said he’d had the IDF set up loudspeakers so his speech could be broadcast around Gaza in real time.

“I’m sure there are people in New York or London or in Melbourne and elsewhere who are probably thinking, ‘What does all this have to do with me?'” Netanyahu said. He then offered an answer: “Everything, because our enemies are your enemies.” This was followed by the first ever UN pop quiz.

He then criticized Israel’s critics for failing to stand with the country against the barbarians at the gates. “You can’t appease your way out of jihad. And you won’t escape the Islamist storm by sacrificing Israel.”

He eventually moved on to the decision by France, Canada and the UK to recognize a Palestinian state. He accused those countries of rewarding Hamas for murdering Jews.

That led up to what was probably the single best line in his entire speech. “Giving the Palestinians a state one mile from Jerusalem after October 7th is like giving Al Qaeda a state one mile from New York City after September 11th.”

He then pointed out that a recent vote on this topic in the Israeli Knesset had 90% voting against the imposition of a Palestinian state. In other words, this isn’t just his view as a leader from the right, it’s the overwhelming majority view throughout Israel.

He wound up the speech by predicting that peace was possible in the Middle East once Hezbollah, Hamas and the current government of Iran had been defeated. He predicted that a future Iran, free of the Mullahs, would be a friend to Israel.

Those are the highlights of his 40 minute speech. If you prefer to see the whole thing in context, it’s here.
