Margot Robbie’s new £33million movie A Big Bold Beautiful Journey flops at the UK box office after receiving ‘brutal’ reviews from critics who branded it an ‘insufferable romantic fantasy’

Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell’s new movie A Big Bold Beautiful Journey has failed to make an impact at the UK box office.

Despite Margot capturing attention at the London premiere in a backless, bejewelled see-through gown, the film didn’t make the top five most-watched movies – earning just £532,00 across the country.

The £33 million production received lukewarm reviews from critics, which may have contributed to its lacklustre performance.

In contrast, Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale topped the charts with £2.3 million in its second weekend.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey earned an average of just £820 per cinema across 649 venues – roughly equivalent to 100 tickets sold per location over the weekend.

The A-list pairing’s romcom follows Sarah and David who meet at a wedding before being swept up in an otherworldly adventure to relive their past milestone moments together.

With a string of two and three star reviews, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey has earned a 56 percent ‘rotten’ score on Rotten Tomatoes and a 39 ‘generally unfavorable’ rating on Metacritic.

Director Kogonada has previously won huge critical acclaim for his 2017 directorial debut Columbus as well as his previous team-up with Farrell, 2021’s After Yang.

But his plunge into big screen blockbuster has failed to match expectations, with one of the most brutal reviews declaring it as ‘a big, bold, beautiful bore.’

Indiewire’s Ryan Lattanzio writes that the film ‘is miscalculated as a romance and a fantasy, and while I’m loath to blame a craftsman as intelligent as Kogonada entirely for the outcome, he did, after all, agree to direct this lousy script.’

Headlining his review ‘Colin Farrell and Margot Robbie Can’t Save This Insufferable Romantic Fantasy,’ William Bibbiani for The Wrap argues that ‘it probably seemed like a slam dunk, hiring these two wonderful and magnetic performers in your romantic fantasy.

‘But you did have to give them something meaningful to perform. Otherwise they’re just standing on screen, trying to make the most of a trifle.’

‘Despite some pretty lens flares, cutesy needle drops (and the occasional big, bold, beautiful things that pass by the window, the only destination A Big Bold Beautiful Journey approaches in the end is an unfortunate bore,’ decided Tomris Laffly for Variety.

Nikki Baughan for Screendaily mused of the casting: ‘Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell certainly make for a handsome pairing – and undoubtedly have serious chemistry – but this high-concept feature tries so hard to charm that it becomes an exercise in wading through sickly sweet treacle.’

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is Margot’s first project since 2023’s Barbie movie – which she both starred in and produced through her LuckyChap company.

That movie topped both the domestic ($636.2million) and worldwide ($1.445billion) box office charts.

Her new movie also marks Margot’s return to work after the birth of her first child a year ago.

‘The script was exquisite and felt very original, magical and romantic, and I wanted to do a love story,’ Margot said this week when asked about the film, before adding cheekily that ‘I would obviously love to do a love story with Colin Farrell’.

Colin has returned the sentiment, gushing that working with Margot ‘was a dream’ from ‘start to finish.’

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey’s release pinpoints another busy period for Margot who will be back on the promo trail early next year for the Emerald Fennell adaptation of Wuthering Heights, which hits cinemas in February.

A Big Bold Beautiful Journey is released on September 19.
