City had their backs to the wall for the duration of the second half – a sight rarely seen under Guardiola – but despite that the City boss was a happy man at full-time.

Guardiola was jubilant with the spirit his side displayed, suggesting they have recovered what they lost last season.

He said in his post-match press conference: “It’s the body language – how we celebrate, how we communicate, how we make an effort.

“We lost it a lot last season. I said I don’t give a f*** about the results, I want to see the spirit back in the training sessions and us enjoying it.

“We had to recover it. This week we have recovered. We have to continue.

“I suffered. I don’t like it, I want the ball far away [from goal].

“But one time 10 years is not bad, right? Our resilience was fantastic, otherwise we cannot survive.”

Guardiola went through a range of emotions at the Emirates, and at one point he tried to kiss fourth official Craig Pawson.

His side are now ninth in the Prem after a stuttering start, but they won their Champions League opener against Italian champions Napoli on Thursday.

And Guardiola believes there has been a marked improvement from last season, when a run of six games without a win left the Spaniard scratching his face and head.

That incident occurred when City blew a 3-0 lead at home to Feyenoord, with Guardiola later apologising for joking that his team’s form had driven him to harm himself.
