The moment occurred just before the break, and Sky Sports viewers were left in shock after seeing the damage.

Brave Edmundson valiantly tried to continue, but his eye instantly swelled up and he was forced off amid concussion fears.

The cameras showed the damage as he trudged off, and fans quickly took to X.

One person wrote: “Oooof George Edmundson with a very nasty looking swollen shiner..”

Another said: “Edmundson fuming that he wasn’t allowed to play on with only 1 eye like a cyclops.”

While a third joked: “Edmundson looks like he’s tryna sneak scran into the cinema under his eyebrow.”

The setback was a huge blow to the former Ipswich star, especially after he played a major role in Boro’s opener.

It was his long throw that was flicked on by Luke Ayling for David Strelec to stab home his first Boro goal since the Slovakia striker’s £6.5m arrival from Slovan Bratislavian.

Heggebo got one back for the visitors late in the match, but they could not complete the comeback.
