The deportation of just TWO migrants under ‘one in, one out’ scheme shows it will never be a deterrent

Doing two little

MINISTERS hailing the deportation of just TWO migrants under the new deal with France were like football fans celebrating winning the league after the first match of the season.

Cheers predictably turned to groans yesterday as hundreds of new asylum seekers arrived on dinghies.

Currently, the scores since the scheme was announced is 10,000 in, two out.

Yesterday’s crossings make it clear that the legal challenges mean it will never be a deterrent.

One ex-aid worker says the UK would need to deport more than 2,000 failed asylum seekers a week before the people-smuggling gangs would consider giving up their nauseatingly lucrative trade.

The Government will never get anywhere near that.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmoud claims to be furious at last-minute vexatious claims made to avoid deportation.

But if she’s looking to vent that anger she might look across the Cabinet table at the human-rights-loving Attorney General Lord Hermer who has given free advice to a leftwing charity which now offers guidance to asylum seekers on how to game the system.

Who will rid us of this troublesome lawyer?

Many migrants attempting to board a small boat, some with children, are visible in the water.

A poor legacy

THE Government claims its new Legacy deal over investigations into deaths during the Northern Ireland Troubles offers fresh protections for British veterans.

It does nothing of the sort.

Responsibility for decades-old investigations has now been passed to a new unit in the Republic of Ireland, overseen by Irish police.

Small boat crossings under Labour are on brink of hitting 50,000 – one illegal migrant every 11 mins since the election

Hundreds of civil cases — the vast majority against former members of the security services — will be reopened.

That surely will mean MORE former British servicemen facing being dragged through the courts.

The fact that veterans will be able to give evidence via video link from home is a paltry compensation.

This grubby deal benefiting Ireland’s republicans is a shameful betrayal of British heroes.

Borrowed time

YOU might wonder why the Government is borrowing at monthly amounts not seen since the Covid pandemic?

Firstly, it’s to finance massive pay rises for Labour’s mates in the public sector unions.

Secondly, to service spiralling Government debt at higher rates because the markets view spending as unsustainable.

Finally because inflation remains stubbornly high and tax revenues are down as a result of the National Insurance hike which has cost jobs and driven up prices.

A miserable Budget of huge tax rises is now inevitable.
