A cruise ship worker has revealed the secret codes ship crew use to communicate without passengers understanding.
Amber Olivia, a travel content creator who also works on cruise ships, says there are lots of codes depending on the ship.
She explained in a video on TikTok that the words and phrases have secret meanings and don’t explicitly say what they refer to.
Known on TikTok as @amboliviaa, she posted the video to her 100,000 followers.
In the clip, Amber said: ‘If you’ve ever cruised before, you will know that sometimes over the tannoy we have loads of different codes.’
It’s a way to alert staff of a situation without causing alarm or panic to guests staying on the ship.

She added: ‘However, it causes a lot of gossip and confusion. So there are a few different codes.

‘We’ve got Code Alpha, Code Victoria, Code X-ray, Assessment Team. There are lots of different ones depending on what cruise line you’re on.
‘Today’s code that I’m going to talk about is Code Alpha.’
Amber then explained the hidden meaning of this cruise code.
She divulged: ‘Code Alpha means it’s something to do with medical.
‘It’s a medical emergency, somebody needs medical assistance.
‘So if you hear this, it is usually for the medical crew.’
She adds that, since she is part of the entertainment team, she would not respond to this code.
‘It could be something as little as someone has fallen over and hurt their leg. But it also could be something as big as death.
Amber then explained the hidden meaning of this cruise code, Alpha
‘I’m going to tell you a secret. Usually, if it’s Code Alpha, and then a few minutes later you hear them asking for a stretcher team, and it’s going to a cabin in the middle of the night, not always – but sometimes – that means that somebody has unfortunately passed away.’
The video drew attention from viewers as it revealed insider secrets, with one commenting: ‘On the cruise I went to in June, we had Code Alpha to the theatre starboard side come over the Tannoy! Wondered what exactly had happened!’
Another added: ‘Alpha you don’t want to hear.’
