NFL betting markets
Like any sport, American football has a whole host of betting markets for every game.
We’ve taken a look at some of the main markets at play which most bookmakers will offer.
- Money line: The easiest market of the lot, essentially a money line is betting on a match result. In this market you’re betting on whichever team you think will end the game victorious.
- Point spread: More commonly known as ‘handicap betting’ to UK punters, the point spread will give one team a points head start and subtract an amount off the other team. Your bet is paid out as a winner if you select a spread and points head start/deficit and your team wins with those points + or -.
- Total points: Another simple market, you’re betting here on the combined number of points scored in any game. It’s likely the easiest bet for those unfamiliar with the NFL as it’s easy to follow and a bit of a form read can help determine.
- Touchdown scorer: A popular betting market usually and one that can certainly pay well if the selection lands. With touchdown scorers, you can bet on a whole host of markets, including who will score the first touchdown, last touchdown or even just to score a touchdown at any stage in the game. Some bookmakers offer other specials like scoring during particular quarters.
- 1st team drive outcome: This bet looks at the first attacking play from the teams and you bet on what the outcome of that will be. It’ll either end in a Field Goal Attempt, Touchdown, Punt or Turnover.
- Player props: There are a lot more markets for player props and these might take a little more knowhow and skill to establish. For example, you can bet on a player’s passing touchdown total, rushing attempts, receiving yards, passing yards and receptions.
