She revealed it has improved her confidence as well as her own self-belief – and you don’t need a degree to achieve it.
She had racked up thousands of pounds in debt
The 36-year-old from Leicester had been living beyond her means, and had racked up £13,000 worth of debt.
Using credit cards to support her family, she had even used one to pay for a deposit on a caravan.
But her fortunes changed after she turned her hand to content creation and posting reviews of plus-size clothing on TikTok.
TikTok is one of the world’s most popular social media platforms and has more than 1.59 billion users who watch its short videos.
Around 34 million videos are uploaded to the app every day and many of its content creators make money from their accounts.
It’s literally life-changing
She told the BBC, her new job is “Literally life-changing.”
People of all ages and abilities have taken to social media to boost their income – but how did Roxanne do it?
Roxanne explained how she bought a dress from TikTok Shop and filmed herself trying it on.
She then posted the clip with a review for her 1,000 followers last year.
When someone bought the dress from her link that she posted with the video – she gained 10% for each one bought.
She earned £200 in commission from that dress manufacturer in a week and soon other companies offered her samples to review.
She told the BBC: “In my second month I earned £600 and it just went up and up gradually.
“I’m now earning up to £5,000 per month from just two to three hours’ work a day, it’s insane.”
Sometimes imposter syndrome does sneak in
When it comes to TikTok success, the most important thing is to find your niche.
How to shop safely on TikTok shop
TIKTOK shop is an e-commerce feature of the video app TikTok and officially launched in September 2023.
Popular TikTok creators often advertise products from the shop as they are given affiliate links which means they make money from referring followers.
Entrepreneurs can upload their products onto TikTok Shop for others to purchase.
However, it is important to stay vigilant when it comes to scams.
- Stick to verified sellers with good reviews—check ratings and feedback before buying.
- Avoid suspiciously low-priced items—“too good to be true” often is.
- Always pay via the in-app checkout, never off-platform.
- Avoid clicking links outside the app—especially unfamiliar domains or QR codes.
- Read product descriptions carefully and note return policies.
- Document your order—save screenshots and track delivery updates.
- Report suspicious activity through TikTok and initiate disputes if necessary.
