His agent, Michael Greene, confirmed The Green Mile star died with his wife by his side.

In a statement, he said: “He was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed. You are finally free.”

And referencing his late former agent, he added: “Susan Smith is meeting you at the gates of heaven.”

He did not reveal the legendary actor’s cause of death, but he is understood to have died after a long illness.

One of Greene’s standout roles saw him play Kicking Bird in Dances with Wolves in 1990.

He later went on to appear in Die Hard with a Vengeance (1995), The Green Mile (1999) and Winter‘s Tale (2014).

His first performing roles came in Canadian and English theatre productions in the 1970s.

Greene then broke into TV, making his debut in Canadian drama The Great Detective in 1979.

Four years later, he appeared in his first movie, Running Brave.

But his career truly took off following his casting in Kevin Costner’s Dances with Wolves.

He earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in the famous Western.

The film itself scored 12 Academy Award nominations and won seven, including Best Picture.

In 1994, he received plaudits for his appearance as Mel Gibson’s sidekick in Maverick.

And a year later, he joined Samuel L. Jackson and Bruce Willis in Die Hard with a Vengeance.

His decades-long career also saw him play a prisoner in The Green Mile, where he featured alongside Tom Hanks.

More recently, he appeared in The Twilight Saga (2009), starring opposite Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

Speaking to Salon in 2021 about his career, Greene told how he preferred playing a “variety of roles”.

He said: “I tend to move along in my career and take roles that are unique and different.

“I’ve played God twice. I’ve played judges, lawyers, doctors, police officers, and detectives.

“The diversity of roles is what I like to play. I don’t like to be pigeonholed as one thing because you get stuck in one role.”

Tributes flooded in for the actor on social media.

One fan said: “RIP Graham Greene. He was one of those wonderful actors that I always enjoyed seeing in anything.
