Brighton welcome Manchester City to the Amex Stadium on Sunday with both sides looking to bounce back from disappointing 2-0 defeats last weekend.
The Seagulls were undone at Everton’s new Hill Dickenson Stadium, while City continued their woeful run against Spurs at the Etihad.
Midweek fixtures are usually seen as a disruption, but Brighton’s 6-0 demolition of Oxford United in the Carabao Cup may just be the spark they need after struggling in front of goal in their opening two Premier League games.
Fulham snatched a late equaliser at the Amex on the opening day, before Albion blanked on Merseyside despite dominating possession and posting an xG of 2.46.
Brighton are clearly missing Joao Pedro, and the stats tell the story – they’ve produced the fourth-highest expected goals (3.91) in the top flight but have scored just once, the worst xG-to-goal differential (-2.91) in the division.
They’ll need to be far more clinical against a Manchester City side boasting the fourth-best expected goals conceded (xGC) and a dominant head-to-head record – with 19 wins from 30 league meetings.
Pep Guardiola’s men were rampant at Wolves before falling flat against bogey side Spurs – a result not helped by goalkeeper James Trafford’s blunder.
Still, the Cityzens boast the best xG from open play in the division, average a shot every 7.8 minutes, and have conceded fewer quality chances than most.
