Selby reacts to Gilbert win

Mark Selby lauded opponent David Gilbert after beating him 5-2 yesterday.

Selby had runs of 56, 66 and 56 en route to victory and will now face Mark Williams in the next round in a heavyweight clash.

Speaking after the win, Selby said of Gilbert: “When you are playing somebody of that level, one shot here or there can be the difference between winning and losing.

“Because he is such a clever player he sees the shots so fast.

He will play a shot quickly and you will come to the table thinking you have an ordinary snooker shot and the next minute you don’t have a shot on.”

On facing Williams next, he added: “I’ll enjoy the game, I’m sure Mark will and we will see what happens.”

Judd Trump on beating pal

Judd Trump has said he hopes things turn around for good pal Jack Lisowski after he knocked him out of the Wuhan Open with a 5-3 victory yesterday.

Speaking after the victory, he said: “It was a little bit scrappy. We both knew we would play each other if I won two games.

“There was a little bit of anticipation and it is never an enjoyable win against him. We’ve had quite a few finals against each other.

“We had one season where we were both at the top of our game and kept competing. Unfortunately for him, he was just coming out on the wrong side.

“I really feel if he was able to win one of them it would have been a different path.

“It has been a bit of a struggle the last couple of seasons, with some terrible luck off the table. I just hope he can turn it around.”

Elsewhere in snooker

A big story to bring you elsewhere in snooker.

Stephen Lee has returned to the sport following a 12-year ban from competition.

The Wiltshire native, 50, received the ban in 2013 when he was found guilty of match fixing.

The charges came in relation to seven matches in 2008 and 2009, including one at the World Championships.

Lee was adjudged to have accepted thousands of pounds in exchange for influencing the outcome of matches.

But the five-time ranking event winner’s ban expired last October, leaving him free to return to the table.

Now he has finally made his return through an event with the Billiard Sports Association of Thailand.
