Q: I’ve always really struggled with organisation, processing information and instructions, as well as time management – and my lack of these skills has caused me to lose several jobs.

Around 15 years ago, I was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyspraxia, and although having a diagnosis helped, I never felt like my lived experience fitted with the conditions.

Instead, I strongly believe I have ADHD and ASD, and am currently waiting for an assessment.

My confidence is at an all-time low and I worry how I am ever going to be successful securing a job and keeping it.

Do you have any advice? Name and address supplied

A: It’s understandable to feel uncertain during a diagnosis process.

But your difficulties don’t define your potential.

Conditions like dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD or ASD can bring real challenges, but they also come with strengths: creative thinking, problem-solving, attention to detail and empathy.

These qualities, along with your perseverance, are valuable.

Many people with similar experiences go on to thrive in their careers, so try not to be discouraged if past roles weren’t the right fit.

Look for jobs that align with your working style and strengths.

Tools such as planners, reminders, breaking tasks into steps and building routines can help with organisation and time management.

It’s also worth considering professional support from occupational therapists or career coaches who understand neurodiversity.

Once your ADHD and ASD assessments are complete, you’ll have a clearer understanding of your needs and be able to access tailored support.

With the right help and environment, I have no doubt you’ll build a fulfilling career.
