A MAJOR motorway has been closed after a crash sparked chaos — leaving thousands of drivers stuck in long delays.

The incident happened on the M6 northbound between junction 17 at Sandbach and junction 18 at Holmes Chapel, in Cheshire, this afternoon.

Two lanes are shut on the busy route towards Greater Manchester, with queues stretching for miles.

Traffic is already heavy through the area, and motorists are being warned to expect disruption into the evening rush.

An update from traffic monitoring service Inrix said: “Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to accident on M6 Northbound from J17 A534 Old Mill Road (Sandbach / Crewe) to J18 A54 Middlewich Road (Middlewich / Holmes Chapel).”

Live data from Google Maps shows congestion backing up beyond junction 17, near Sandbach services, as cars crawl through the delays.

National Highways officers are on scene managing traffic, while emergency services deal with the incident.

Motorists heading north have been urged to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys, with drivers already facing lengthy delays.
