Mother of the bride sparks fury with dress for daughter’s wedding, but says she’s fed up being a ‘background player’

A MOTHER of the bride has sparked fury after revealing her dress for her daughter’s wedding.

Despite the fact the 28-year-old bride told her mum she wanted her to look “elegant and understated” – the latter being the keyword – she opted for a full-length WHITE corset dress.

In a post on Facebook, she said her daughter had asked her to wear a “classic and timeless” ensemble, adding “maybe something in navy”.

“Translation: boring and invisible,” she wrote.

“She also said she didn’t care if I wear something bright.

“I’ve spent so much of my life being the background player in everyone else’s story that I almost forgot I deserved to be seen too.”

The dress is emblazoned with sunflowers on the bodice and all the way down, and has a tulle-style underskirt to make it look even puffier.

She added that the gown makes her “feel alive in a way I haven’t in years”.

“The sunflowers are bold and joyful, exactly how I want to feel watching my baby girl say her vows,” she said.

“But every time I look at it, I hear her voice telling me it’s ‘too much’ for a mother of the bride, that people will think I’m trying to upstage her on her special day.”

However, she said she can’t decided whether or not she’s “finally ready to take up space instead of shrinking to make others comfortable”.

“Maybe it’s time to be the sunflower instead of the wallflower?” she concluded.

But the comments section was quickly filled with people taking aim at the woman.

“Omg you absolutely cannot wear this to a wedding,” one person gasped.

“What an interesting time to choose to be seen.

“Wear what she is asking, it’s HER day!”

“I thought this was a wedding dress…” another mused.

“Her wedding is about her. Not you,” a third insisted.

Wedding Guest Outfit Etiquette

If you’re struggling to decided on a dress to see you through wedding season, here’s a few rules on what not to wear so you don’t get in trouble.

  • Folklore says that wearing red at a wedding means you slept with the groom.
  • Casual attire like jeans and flip flops should always be avoided.
  • Any colour that could be picked up as white or cream – even if it’s not.
  • Most would agree that your cleavage needs to be covered.
  • Wearing white is a massive no-no if you’re not the bride.

“You don’t need an excuse to wear what you find beautiful.

“HOWEVER, RESPECT your daughters request and wear that particular dress ANOTHER day.”

“This is a background event for you,” someone else agreed.

“It’s lovely but you don’t want people talking about your dress – hers is the one.”

“I absolutely love this dress but… I’m sorry you should not wear this dress to your daughters wedding,” another wrote.

“It is HER day to shine and be the main focus not you in this dress that looks like a wedding dress.

“Maybe you should respect her wishes and get a navy or classic dress.”
