THE SUSPECT and one police officer have died after an active shooter started firing at a university campus in Atlanta.
Staff at Emory University told students to “RUN, HIDE, FIGHT” and avoid the area.
Gunshots could be heard blasting across the campus in chilling footage shared on social media.
An alert was issued by the school at around 5pm, with reports of the shooter near the Emory Point CVS on campus.
The shooter also fired at the neighbouring CDC building, according to reports.
One police officer was shot near the campus, according to Fox 5 Atlanta.
Sources have told Atlanta News First that the officer has subsequently passed away.
Dozens of cops rushed to the scene as the terrifying events unfolded.
Shocking photos shared online show bullet holes punched through the windows of the CDC headquarters, which is next to the university.
Out on the ground, a cop car was also pictured covered with bullet holes.
Another picture shows a person lying on a stretcher next to an ambulance surrounding by cops.
Neighbours reported hearing gunshots piercing the air, following by deafening sirens of police vehicles dashing to the scene.
Emergency service vehicles swarmed the campus in response to the frightening reports.
An officer and one civilian were taken to the hospital, according to cops.
An Atlanta Police Department spokesperson said: “There is no ongoing threat to the Emory campus or the surrounding neighborhood.
“The incident involved a single shooter, who is now deceased.”
They added: “Please avoid the area, as the scene remains active and law enforcement continues its investigation.
“We thank you for your cooperation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.”
Emory University and Emory University Hospital were placed on lockdown.
A chilling X post from the university reads: “Active shooter on Emory Atlanta Campus at Emory Point CVS.
“RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. Avoid the area. Continue shelter in place. Police on scene.”
A CDC employee told Fox 5 Atlanta that those inside the main campus were not being allowed to leave.
Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr posted on X: “We’re horrified by the news out of Emory University and praying for the safety of the entire campus community.
“We stand ready to assist our law enforcement partners with whatever they may need.”
Atlanta police have confirmed they were responded to reports of an active shooter.
An FBI Atlanta spokesperson said: “FBI Atlanta is aware of the incident on Clifton Road in DeKalb County and is enroute and cooperating with local partners for any assistance that might be needed.”
Georgia Representative Mike Collins posted on X: “Students at Emory please take cover.
“Praying for a swift end to this threat.”
Staff at a deli near the campus were reported to have locked the doors and taken cover inside.
Brandy Giraldo, General Miurs chief operating officer, told AP the staff heard a string of gunshots during the terrifying ordeal.
The suspected shooter’s identity has not yet been revealed.
