British tourist, 74, is found dead on his sun lounger on Greek beach

A British tourist has been found dead on his sun lounger on a popular Greek beach.

The 74-year-old man was discovered unconscious at around 12pm on Sunday, July 20, by fellow beach-goers on Stalis Beach on the popular Greek isle of Crete.

The Brit, who had taken himself to the beach in a bid to enjoy the idyllic sea, went for a swim before sitting on a sun lounger to relax.

However, he then became struck with a ‘strong feeling’ of sickness before losing consciousness, the cretapost has reported.

Hellenic National Center of Emergency Care (EKAB) were immediately made aware of the incident and called to the scene.

Emergency services then worked tirelessly in a desperate bid to revive the elderly man, but unfortunately their efforts proved unsuccessful.

The cause of his death is currently unknown, with an autopsy being undertaken.

An FCDO Spokesperson said: ‘We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities.’

The tragedy comes after a 73-year-old man was discovered at the spot in Agia Paraskevi, Siathos (pictured, file image), on June 20, with onlookers immediately alerting a lifeguard who was then able to provide first aid and call the emergency services

The tragedy comes following a series of deaths of British tourists on beaches in popular tourist hotspots, with a British tourist also found dead on a Greek beach just last month.

The 73-year-old man was discovered at the spot in Agia Paraskevi, Siathos, on June 20, with onlookers immediately alerting a lifeguard who was then able to provide first aid and call the emergency services.

While a doctor from a nearby health center tried desperately for 40 minutes to revive the tourist, he was later tragically pronounced dead.

An autopsy was set to shed light on the cause of his death.

At the time, an FCDO spokesperson said: ‘We are supporting the family of a British man who has died in Greece and are in contact with the local authorities’.

Meanwhile, on June 12, a 68-year-old man was tragically found dead in Lindos, on the island of Rhodes, with local media reporting that he had gone for a swim and lost consciousness before sadly passing away.

Officers from the Central Port Authority of Rhodes rushed to the scene following reports of his body being found.

He was then transferred to the island’s Archangelos Health Center where he was sadly pronounced dead.

In early June, two British tourists died on the Algarve after jumping into their holiday apartment pool after a night out.

The alarm was raised around 4.30am at a hotel apartment in the party resort of Albufeira where two British men died last month.

Emergency responders sent to the scene made unsuccessful attempts to revive the two men this morning.

Police are said to be working on the theory the pair, aged 27 and 29, got into difficulties because they had been drinking and didn’t know how to swim.

Portugal’s Policia Judiciaria have been asked by colleagues at the GNR police force to investigate the circumstances surrounding the men’s deaths but they are not being treated as suspicious at this stage.

On June 4 Scots tourist Greg Monks was tragically found dead near Albufeira town centre after going missing a week earlier.

The 38-year-old plant mechanic from Glasgow is believed to have lost his life after jumping over a wall and falling down a steep hillside during a night out with his stag do friends.

A search for him was launched on May 28 and his parents and girlfriend Nicole Kelso flew to Albufeira to help with the efforts to find him.

Around four hours before Greg’s body was found by police, another young British tourist was found dead in Albufeira, at the back of a residential block below a steep drop near the Old Town.

The 21-year-old, also said to have gone out drinking with pals and thought to have become disorientated as he tried to get back to his hotel, was never named. News of his death only emerged three days after Greg was found dead.
