80s TV star and CHiPs alum whose son is an A-list nepo baby looks unrecognizable at 84 on rare outing

One of the most enduring actors of the 70s and 80s was spotted out on a rare outing in Los Angeles on Monday, much to the delight of fans.

The 84-year-old star, who shot to fame playing Sgt. Joseph Getraer on the hit series CHiPs, looked remarkably spry as he carried equipment during a trip to the local Home Depot.

Dressed casually in jeans and a light jacket, he was a world away from his California Highway Patrol uniform alongside fellow CHiPs stars Erik Estrada and Larry Wilcox.

He might not have been chasing down crooks, but he looked more than capable as he lifted a propane tank and loaded it into his cart with ease.

The Herculean effort may run in the family – his son Chris Pine has become a bona fide action hero with films like Star Trek and Hell or High Water.

Fans might also recall the TV legend for his numerous guest appearances, including playing the fathers of iconic characters such as Magnum P.I. (Tom Selleck) and Zack Morris (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) on Saved by the Bell.

If you guessed Robert Pine, you’re right.

Born Granville Whitelaw Pine on July 10, 1941, in New York City, Pine got his start in Hollywood in the 1960s after graduating from Ohio Wesleyan University in 1963.

He quickly carved out a niche for himself guest‑starring on dozens of shows – including Gunsmoke, Lost in Space, Barnaby Jones, Lou Grant and Knight Rider – before landing his breakout role on CHiPs.

Offscreen, Pine’s life has been just as rich.

He married actress Gwynne Gilford in 1969, and the couple have been together for more than five decades – a rarity in Hollywood.

Gilford, who appeared in several CHiPs episodes as Betty Getraer, retired from acting in the late 1980s and went on to become a psychotherapist.

Together they raised two children, daughter Katherine and son Chris.

Though rarely in the spotlight in recent years, Pine has continued to stay active both professionally and personally, even starring in the Apple TV+ limited series Five Days at Memorial, which sees him in a dramatic role set against the backdrop of Hurricane Katrina’s aftermath.

Chris Pine, now one of Hollywood’s most bankable leading men, has openly praised his father’s work ethic and long career.

In interviews he’s reflected on how formative it was to grow up in a household that lived and breathed acting, with both parents grinding through lean Hollywood years and teaching him the realities of the business.

‘My dad’s had a hell of a career,’ Chris told IndieWire, recounting some of his father’s early roles and the fact that Pine got his SAG card way back in 1964.

On Dax Shepard’s Armchair Expert podcast, Chris also shared how his parents navigated tough times in the 1980s, including periods when acting work was sparse and the family had to adapt.

‘Going into the ’80s it got rougher and rougher,’ Chris said.

‘My dad, the work got sparser and sparser, and then the real estate crash in ’87 or ’88 pretty much wiped my family out.

‘Then it was some really rough years, and then my mom went back to school.

‘I have so much respect for what she did. She went back to UCLA and got her BA. She went back and got her Master’s at Antioch.’

He said those experiences taught him ‘a strength and humility’ that still influences his approach to life and his craft.

Robert Pine has also been vocal about how proud he is of his son’s achievements.

At the premiere of Chris’ directorial debut Poolman, he said what mattered most to him wasn’t the box office success, but that his son had become a ‘wonderful addition to this business’.

With a career spanning nearly six decades and a family legacy that stretches back generations – including Chris’ maternal grandmother, actress and pin‑up model Anne Gwynne – Pine remains one of Hollywood’s most cherished character stars.

And as fans saw on Monday, even at 84 he’s still got the energy and heart that made him a household name.
